During the summer of 1949, while Karl (seen in this photo) was building the first room, we lived in these tents. There were 3: one for Karl and Becky, one for Eric and Brian, and one for ceramics supplies and tools. A large blacksnake took up residence in the latter. During this time, sanitation consisted of a latrine in the woods up the hill in back of the living quarters.
This photo was taken standing up the hill behind the house, looking down over the
bulldozer-leveled
plot upon which the house was built. In the background is Old State Road 46. Our
mailbox was on the far side of the road. Mail was addressed to Rural Route #4,
Nashville, Indiana.
